Washington, D.C. October 3, 2005 - Osyka
Corporation (Osyka), an African-American
wholly-owned and operated oil and gas
exploration company based in Houston, TX, have
become the first-ever African-American company
to be awarded an oil block in Africa. Osyka has
secured block OPL 277 in the Federal Republic
of Nigeria's recently concluded 2005 Oil and
Gas Licensing Round.
OPL 277 is located in Nigeria's Niger Delta, a
region that has gained international notoriety
by the subsequent host community's unrest
spawned by years of neglect from major oil
companies. West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, home
to such billion-barrel discoveries as Bonga,
Agbami, and Erha, has become one of the world's
most prolific hydrocarbon zones. The Gulf of
Guinea is strategically located close to US
refineries in the Gulf of Mexico, and its blend
of light sweet crude oil makes it a favorite
product of US refineries. This has contributed
to it's burgeoning importance to US energy
security.
Osyka's win is a great validation of NCME's
efforts in helping U.S. minority-owned and
operated energy companies in capitalizing on
business opportunities in Africa. The National
Council of Minorities in Energy's ("NCME")
President, Jerry V. Curry, said. " This
opportunity could not have come at a better
time, we now have a minority-owned energy
company positioned to capture the attention of
the world and to emphasize the importance of
minority-owned company's key role in helping
secure the vast energy resources in West Africa
and advancing the energy security of America."
